Bene Hasan Tombs

Crossing the Nile by bridge, here in Minya, one is greeted by the bust of Nefertiti. Today, this is Bene Hasan territory

A happy kid whose dad is in the tombstone business. I hope the kid is just as happy today, after all of the upheaval in Egypt.

My guide drove along the western shore of the Nile where cargo dhaus were delivering this while stone and sand

We parked, paid a fee, and then hiked up the steps to a high rocky ledge above the Nile valley.

From up here one has an awesome view of the Nile valley, as it pretty much has looked for thousands of years.

But the view is really not the objective here. Up here, guarded by national police and armed Bene Hasan tribes members are a number of locked doors.

The doors bar entry to tombs that are thousands of years old. Since they are in Bene Hasan territory, they permit access.

Stone carving, sometime hieroglyphics, sometime a carving like this, of a mounted rider, in this case, can be seen on the walls around those doors.
